Easy Referrals: Proven Ways to Grow Your Client Base
by Casey Eberhart
One kitchen Reno later, the homeowner raved. Mike didn’t just smile; he handed her a simple card. "If your neighbors ever need a contractor," he said, "I'd be glad to help." That little card became a game-changer. Referrals became his top source of work.
For builders like Mike, word-of-mouth is gold. Why? People trust their friends more than ads. Referred clients are already sold. And happy clients often know others with big projects. Plus, it's basically free marketing.
Here’s Mike’s simple referral recipe:
- Do work people brag about: Mike kept sites clean, his crew professional, and finished on time. Small thank-you notes? Big impact. Lesson: Be the business people can’t stop talking about.
- Ask when they’re thrilled: Right after the big reveal, Mike would casually say, "Know anyone else needing a contractor? I'd love to help!" Lesson: Happy clients are ready to refer. Just ask.
- Make it brain-dead easy: No one has time to hunt down your number. Mike gave out simple cards and digital links. Lesson: Easy sharing equals more referrals.
- Buddy up with other pros: Mike connected with real estate agents, designers, and suppliers. They sent him leads, and he returned the favor. Lesson: Your network is bigger than just clients.
- Say "thanks" with a little extra: Discounts for referring clients, small gifts, VIP perks – Mike showed his appreciation. Lesson: A little gratitude goes a long way.
Your next big job might just be a friendly recommendation away.

Book of the week:
Do any of these networking results seem familiar?
You “wing it” in your one-minute commercial – if you even have a one-minute commercial – and, of course, it gives you “wing it” results – not much if anything.
You spend hours networking attempting to reach more people—but then you don’t follow up.
You want to collaborate with other business owners, but don’t know where to start.
You worry where your next customer is coming from.
If you resonate with any of the above results, you’ll want to read High Level Networking..
