Networking Best Practices for Business Owners

by Casey Eberhart

Jordan's event planning and catering company started strong, but the initial buzz faded. He thought his amazing food would bring in clients, but soon, his calendar looked sparse. "I was just hoping for referrals," Jordan admitted, "not actually networking."

He quickly learned that true networking wasn't about swapping cards; it was about real connections.

Jordan stopped just showing up to events. Instead, he started asking curious questions, genuinely listening to others' challenges and passions. He wasn't pitching; he was trying to understand. "People remember how you made 'em feel," he realized.
He built a referral circle of trusted partners: a florist, a DJ, a venue owner. They weren't competitors; they were allies, sending clients each other's way because they truly trusted one another. Jordan also got good at following up, sending quick, personalized messages after meeting someone, laying groundwork for future opportunities.

Jordan wasn't afraid to share his knowledge either. He'd offer planning checklists or venue recommendations, becoming a helpful resource in the local events scene. And he looked outside his industry, finding unexpected leads at places like a tech startup's opening.

Now, Jordan's calendar is full. His business thrives not because of endless ads, but because he learned to connect. "It's not about who you know," he says. "It's about who knows you, and trusts you." Building that trust, one genuine conversation at a time, is what truly grows a business.
