The Secret to Stronger Business Relationships:
Mastering the Follow-Up

by Casey Eberhart

Sarah cleaned houses and offices, and she was good at it. She figured elbow grease and sparkling surfaces were the ticket to a full schedule. And they helped, sure. But those big, steady contracts? They seemed to slip through her fingers.

The problem wasn't the cleaning; it was the silence after the hello.
Sarah went to meetups, swapped cards, had nice chats. Then… nothing. Those connections just vanished. People were interested, she knew it. But she wasn’t sticking with them.
Once Sarah changed that simple step – the follow-up – everything clicked.

Here’s her no-fuss secret:
  • Fast action: Within two days, Sarah sent a quick, personal email. Something like, "Hey [Name], great chatting at [event] about [that thing you talked about]. If you ever need a reliable cleaner, let's connect!"
  • Make it them-focused: No generic stuff. Sarah’d mention their business goals, their funny story – anything to show she actually listened.
  • Gentle reminders: A three-step touch: a thank you right away, a helpful cleaning tip a week later, then a friendly check-in a month down the line. No hard selling.
  • Mix it up: Not everyone loves email. Sarah used LinkedIn, a quick text, even a handwritten note sometimes. Kept it personal, kept it thoughtful.
  • Offer help first: Before pushing her services, Sarah shared useful cleaning guides or connected people who could help each other. It built trust.
One of Sarah’s biggest clients, a whole office building, came from a casual chat months earlier. They didn’t need her then, but because Sarah stayed in touch, she was the first call they made when they did.

The truth? Meeting people is just the start. The real magic happens in the follow-up. Be quick, be real, be consistent. That’s how you turn a friendly hello into a long-term "yes." It's not just about who you meet; it's about who remembers you when they need your help.
